Blogger is not a dirty word…..

I avoid the ‘so what do you do’ conversation like the plague. It always results in raised eyebrows and confused nods. Blogging can’t really be a career choice, can it? Well actually yes…. it may not make you rich but it can be a ‘real’ job. During a chat session last year about blogging, someone asked Liberty London Girl aka Sasha Wilkins “You make it sound like a full-time job…. how do fit it in with other things (like earning a living)?” To which the ever witty LLG replied “This IS my full-time job!” -enough said.

Slowly attitudes are beginning to change towards bloggers. It’s nice to be invited to shows and snapped for ‘street style’ edits but it’s only recently that brands (or those in charge of  marketing) have really begun to appreciate the value bloggers offer. Yet bloggers seem to be infiltrating main stream fashion at every turn. Here’s a few examples of bloggers who are making their mark on the industry-

Liberty London Girl seems a sensible place to start. Last week the queen of social media popped up on the BBC, commentating on Royal fashion at Ascot.

ELLE magazine

– This week Sophie Osborne (editorial assistant at A Girl, A Style) starts her internship with ELLE. Sophie will be Editor for the October Interns edition of ELLE magazine.

– Jewelley duo Dannijo teamed up with Man Repeller Leandra Medine back in 2011 to design a capsule collection which sold like hot cakes. The latest MR Dannijo collection is on sale right now.

– Anna Hart the woman behind St Molton Street Style landed a role as marketing manager at Vestiaire Collective- a stylish role for a stylish lady.

So repeat after me… ‘Who run the world….. bloggers’

P.S Should point out that Sasha has commentated on Royal Ascot before in her previous role as editor before setting up LLG.

Reading List… FFH Online Loves

Reading List

Don’t panic, this isn’t anything like the dull reading lists at school. These are my top online reads, the sites I visit when I have 5 minutes to spare but be warned…. 5 minutes usually turns into 50- there just that darn good!

Fashion Monitor– These guys never miss a trick. Every launch, appointment, collaboration and any other type of industry news in bite-sized pieces.

Liberty London Girl– Needs no intro (unless you’ve been under a rock for last 7 years!). Sasha infamously broke the news about Kate Moss teaming up with Topshop and regularly features exclusives like a guided tour of Coco Chanel’s Parisian apartment. If you need a little good advice on fashion, beauty, baking or dachshunds- look no further. Style Report– Most children ask for sweets but when my mum went shopping I would always asked for the instore magazine. Instore magazines can be surprisingly good and inspirational. Style Report is my current favourite including the informative style debate.

Prete Moi Paris– Delivers my weekly fix of Parisian chic and Melissa’s recommendations are essential reading for anyone planning on a stylish trip to the French capital.

Really Ree– Handles all my beauty needs. I can pretty much guarantee any product you’re thinking of buying… Really Ree will have tried it out. Never buy another beauty product without checking here first.

Vogue– The fashion bible brings order to my life. Every note-worthy fashion and beauty event from around the globe, chronologically ordered so you never miss anything. EVER.

Wish, Wish, Wish– Sometimes you come across another blogger who inspires you to up your game. It’s not easy admitting that someone else is doing what you do but doing it better. Carrie inspires me to improve the photo’s on Fashion Follows Her. The images on Wish, Wish, Wish are amazing. Simple objects shot in a way that captures the theme of the post and brings the text to life.

Top tutorials @ Red Online

I have to admit I’m selective about who I take advice from. If I’m going to take advice it makes sense to consult with a professional who is at the top of their game. unfortunately finding someone willing and able to take time out of their busy day is almost impossible (which I fully understand, it takes time and dedication to run an empire!!). The lovely people at Red magazine, who are all about empowering women, are running a series of live Q&A sessions with a range of high-profile industry experts. So far Red have featured Brix Smith Smart, Kelly Hoppen and Jane Sherderson, to name a few- the transcripts of these sessions are available to view online. Personally I popped along to Liberty London Girls’ master class a couple of weeks ago and picked up a barrage of tips on running a successful fashion blog. I can best describe the experience as an opportunity to peek behind the scenes of a much-loved and respected brand. The session was frantic, informative and a little bit intimidating as Sasha aka Liberty London Girl drew in quite a crowd. This friday at 1pm Julie Deane will be discussing how she set up the Cambridge Satchel Company. Go along, I promise you will learn something. Below are a few tips on how to get the most out of the sessions.
