Time for Social Media to Share?

ASAP54

The last 12 months has been jam-packed with fabulous fashion and beauty collaborations, Isabel Marant x H&M, Bip Ling/Pretty Ballerina, Adidas/Raf Simons, Lorde for MAC to name but a few. If collaboration is the key to success (the music industry has tons of great examples of what can be achieved when two or more exceptional talents combine forces to produce something that is so much more than the total sum of its parts), imagine what the tech boffins, hidden away in their ivory towers could achieve?

I know the subject of intellectual property is littered with ownership conflict and secrecy and yes, some of the most inspired brands and products of the 21st century were born out of undiluted genius. Idea’s that throw the rule book out the window and re-design the landscape, unrelated to anything that’s gone before.

Facebook opted for a straight buy out with Instagram, the photo sharing service is now one of the fastest growing social media platforms around. But acquisition bares little resemblance to collaboration and personally I don’t see much of an improvement in Instagram since Facebook bought the app.

More encouraging is the increasing level of investment in social media start-up’s. Large brands all desperate to discover the ‘next big thing’ first. ASAP54 predicted to become ‘Google’ of the fashion world reportedly secured $3 million in venture capital to launch their app which allows users to snap an image, submit it to ASAP54 and discover where to find that item within 24 hours. No more ‘I wonder where she got that from’- what a great idea.

I can’t help but wonder, what could be achieved if two complimentary companies combined….. the results could be phenomenal.

Mulberry, Cara & Me…

Mulberry Cara Delevingne

Mulberry launch the Cara Delevingne collection at London Fashion Week…. oh I wish I’d been there!

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how wonderful a Cara Delevingne collection would be…. just putting it out into the fashion ether. Turns out Mulberry and I are in sync, perfect fashion harmony- today Mulberry presented the Cara collection. Whippets wondered the stage, as Cara swung elegantly, twizzling around on a wooden swing. The whole extravaganza had a Mulberry, enchanted forest feel with Cara playing a naughty but nice pixie.

Mulberry handbags

The collection designed by Cara works an urban vibe, practical but elegant. The signature Mulberry luxe continues with quality craftsmanship, lush leather and iconic hardware. The collection which features quilting and camouflage, is also functional too. Three styles which can be worn in three ways (backpack, shoulder and clutch) comes in three sizes. Cara has added her own rebellious touches; iron rivets and heart-shaped patches inspired by her own tattoos hide inside, waiting to be discovered. On the base of each bag ‘Made in London’ is embossed, just like the tattoo on Cara’s foot.

So to all those haters who wondered what would become of Mulberry without Emma Hill…. this is your answer.

Are you being served… Isabel Marant X H&M

Isabel Marant X H&M

I woke up early, waited for the store to open, queued for hours and ended up completing the transaction on the phone. My perseverance paid off and I scored a pair of boots, suede shoes and a silk dress (although I haven’t received them yet so it could all still go horribly wrong!). The customer service team provided a quick, efficient service but the online facilities were hinky at best. Being placed on hold, online, is beyond annoying but in all honesty, who expected any different? This is Isabel Marant we’re talking about… the coolest collaboration of the year- queues to be expected. More than anything this highlights the lack of motivation some large retailers have for online customer service. The organisation of the launch in store seemed very organised- colour coded wristbands and a list of rules, obviously a fair amount of effort went in to planning the event. I’d be interested to know why retailers manage to cope with the increased numbers of customers in store but can’t manage to deliver the same level of service online? How did you get on?
